What is Cross-Graining?
Buff-Tuff Mouthguard Laminate is an Orthotropic material. This means that the grain of the laminates (on a microscopic scale) is orthogonal (i.e. 90 degrees). This allows for added strength and a constant uniform thickness. As the heated material sags under gravity, the two laminar forces "fight" each other & do not allow it to thin. See Figure 1 below;

What is the difference between Buff-Tuff Mouthguard Laminate and other typical mouthguard materials?
Buff-Tuff Mouthguard Laminate is manufactured with pure EVA material, the difference lies in our manufacturing process. This carefully calibrated process allows molecules to reorient themselves from a horizontal orientation to a vertical under stress. Buff-Tuff redefines EVA materials with its very rare auxetic characteristics, thus offering a truly pure material with complete uniform thickness throughout the appliance.

Why is Buff-Tuff BPA-free and Dioxin-free?
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a key component used to make epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastic, which are used to make consumer goods. Polycarbonate is clear, strong, lightweight, and resistant to heat and shattering. This combination of properties makes polycarbonate plastic ideal for use in eyeglasses, water bottles, CDs, DVDs, cell phones and other electronics, bicycle helmets, automobiles, airplanes and medical equipment.
Research has linked bisphenol A — a compound found in plastic food and drink containers, compact discs, electronics and automobile parts, and in the lining in some metal cans — to a number of adverse health effects such as infertility, cardiovascular problems, diabetes and feminization of developing male infants.
Dioxin is the name generally given to a class of super-toxic chemicals, the chlorinated dioxins and furans, formed as a by-product of the manufacture, molding, or burning of organic chemicals and plastics that contain chlorine. Dioxin is formed when PVC is heated in presence of oxygen. Since our materials are completely PVC-free, Dioxin cease to be formed.

Does Buff-Tuff contain any PVC ?
Buff-Tuff laminate is completely PVC-free. PVC stands for Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, commonly known as "vinyl," and has become one of the most widely-used types of plastics.
How is the Buff-Tuff Laminate Shred-Proof?
The unique method of the lamination process allows the Buff-Tuff material to be completely balanced. This allows a professionally finished mouthguard to be seam-free, therefore preventing any shredding or tearing.
How is the Buff-Tuff Laminate Bite-Proof?
The "patent pending"
cross-graining in the material of the Buff-Tuff Laminate offers very rare auxetic characteristics. During the vacuum forming prodedure, this material actually thickens as it is stretched. Thus forming a uniform and balanced thickness over a custom made made appliance.
